Dunkirk Map 1940. A British ship rescues soldiers from a landing craft sunk during an operation near Dunkirk. German forces advancing rapidly through Belgium and France forced the British and French troops back around Dunkirk.

During the Battle of Dunkirk from May 26 to June 4 1940 some 338000 British Expeditionary Force BEF and other Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk to England as German forces closed in. To the south German tanks and mechanised troops advanced rapidly through northern France to the sea and split the Allied armies in two. On June 4 1940 22-year-old Carson McCullers first novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is published.

May 25-31 1940 German armed forces pressed the Allied armies trapped in the north from south and east into the English Channel.

Of note this British map shows friendly British forces red and enemy German forces in blue which normally friendly is blue. From actual surveys especially for this atlas.
