The Places API is also available with the Java Client Python Client Go Client and Nodejs Client for Google Maps Services.
The search box will return a pick list containing a mix of places and predicted search terms. Phone number - Click the Phone text box then type in your places phone number. At least its hard to see how this could be automated by a script without causing major errors. Google couldnt be expected to solve that one until someone with knowledge of the local area makes maps where also small places are given English names or transliterated.
