Unfortunately theres no way to determine the letter designation for the 100000-meter square simply by looking at a USGS topo map making MGRS less than fully useful with these maps. The MGRS is derived from the Universal Transverse Mercator UTM grid system and the Universal Polar Stereographic UPS grid system but uses a different labeling convention. It is also a complete helper.
